What is your approach to training?
My style is to partner with you to help you prepare for your trip. We’ll collaborate to:
- assess your current activity level compared with the trip itinerary
- create a customized training plan
- develop a realistic and achievable schedule to get ready for your adventure
- overcome obstacles and challenges that may come up along the way
- support your progress and celebrate your success!
Why should I work with you to prepare for a trip? What will I get out of it?
When you work with me, you’ll get personalized attention, guidance and accountability to help you take the steps (physically and mentally) that are best for you to reach your goals.
My clients tell me it’s especially helpful to meet with me regularly to review their progress, learn what’s working (or not), and adjust what they’re doing to stay on track.

How do you do training virtually?
I meet with most of my clients via video chat. I create the training plan, and they do the actual training independently, wherever they are and whenever works best for them. Here’s how it works:
- During our sessions we’ll focus on how you’re doing with the plan, making adjustments, and troubleshooting anything that has come up.
- I’ll provide videos of strength training exercises and workouts for you to follow.
- As needed, we can dedicate sessions (or a portion of a session) to reviewing form and mechanics of exercises.
- You can always text me with questions or we can do a quick video chat if something comes up while you’re exercising.
How long do I need to train to get ready for an adventure?
It depends on your current activity level, as well as health conditions (including current or past injuries) that may impact how quickly you can add more activity. Don’t worry, we’ll go through all of that to develop your customized plan!
It also depends on how strenuous your upcoming adventure is – how many days you’ll be hiking, the distances for each day, the elevation change, etc. For adventures that involve long distances, significant elevation changes and/or multiple days of hiking, most people benefit from training for at least 3 months before the trip, and some need 6 months.
This allows time for you to increase activity gradually, which makes it easier and reduces the risk of injuries. It also gives you some wiggle room in case something unexpected comes up that interrupts your training, such as sickness, a family situation, work projects, or just life!

There’s lots of free information online about how to get in shape for hiking – why should I pay for a trainer + coach?
Yep, there’s a ton of information out there – it can be conflicting and confusing, and it may not be backed by proof. You can spend hours trying to sort it all out, and then figuring out how you’re going to actually do it is a whole other exercise (literally and figuratively).
As a certified personal trainer and coach, I’ve learned about how effective various physical activities really are, and how to help my clients to find the motivation to actually do them.
I help you focus on the activities and opportunities that will work best for you – which means you’re far more likely to enjoy it AND stick with it!

I offer the initial consultation for free so you can get an idea of how I can help you before you commit to a package. It also gives you an idea of if coaching will help you get to where you want to be.
