FAQS

Do I have to be in shape already to do this?

One of the great things about this experience is it’s designed to help you prepare physically and mentally for hiking Kilimanjaro over the course of 4 months (or longer, if you’d like to start earlier).

As long as you’re physically able to walk a few miles on flat ground to start, and don’t have any medical conditions that would prevent you from increasing your exercise amount and intensity over time, you should be able to do it.

The specific training plan will be personalized for your current fitness level and life situation to build up to the trip’s itinerary.

Why should I work with you to prepare for a trip? What will I get out of it?

When you work with me, you’ll get personalized attention, guidance and accountability to help you take the steps (physically and mentally) that are best for you to reach your goals.

My clients tell me it’s especially helpful to meet with me regularly to review their progress, learn what’s working (or not), and adjust what they’re doing to stay on track.

Here’s how one client puts it:

I appreciated the combination of accountability and challenge! I was absolutely prepared for the journey because of the work we did together. – Carly O., Arvada, CO

How do you do training virtually?

One of the “benefits” of COVID is how we adapted to all things virtual, right? I meet with most of my clients via video chat. They do the actual training independently, wherever they are and whenever works best for them. Here’s how it works:

    • During our sessions we’ll focus on how you’re doing with the plan, making adjustments, and troubleshooting anything that has come up.
    • I’ll provide videos of strength training exercises and workouts for you to follow.
    • As needed, we can dedicate sessions (or a portion of a session) to reviewing form and mechanics of exercises.
    • You can always text me with questions or we can do a quick video chat if something comes up while you’re exercising.
Do I need to belong or go to a gym?

Nope – you should be able to do everything outside or in your home! You’ll get videos and instructions for how to exercise using items you already have (or will need to get for the hike anyway).

Do I need to buy any special equipment?

You’ll need to have hiking shoes or boots, a backpack that will hold the items on the packing list (which we will cover in one of our group sessions), and certain types of clothing.

I also recommend hiking/trekking poles, which we’ll also talk about in the session on gear.

What if I get sick or injured before the training program is complete?

We hope that doesn’t happen! If it does, I’ll work with you to figure out how to make up for the time you miss.

What will the group sessions be like?

Each group session will have a topic or theme. The topics will include intention setting and the pre-trip journey, nutrition for training, Tanzania and indigenous tribes’ culture, gear for climbing Kili, Q&A about the climb, and open Q&A (ask me anything).

Special guests will share their expertise and you’ll be able to ask them questions. You’ll also get to know the others in the group and create connections before the trip!

What happens during the one-on-one coaching sessions?

During your coaching sessions we’ll talk about how training is going, troubleshoot any physical and/or mental challenges you may be facing, brainstorm ways to stay motivated and on track, adjust your plan as needed, and answer any questions you have.

What’s the difference between training and coaching?

Training is the exercising you’ll be doing to get ready for the hike. You’ll get a customized training plan for each week, which will include building your stamina (cardio) and building your strength (key muscle group exercises). You’ll do the training on your own schedule.

Coaching is the one-on-one discussions you’ll be having with Becki about your progress, any challenges, adaptations to your training plan, and staying motivated. Coaching sessions will take place at a mutually convenient time via Zoom.
